Method
Preheat and prepare the pan
- Preheat oven to 350F. Line a 9x13 pan with parchment.
Melt and mix the brownie batter
- Melt the butter and dark chocolate together, then cool slightly. Whisk in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
- Fold in the flour, cocoa, and salt just until no dry streaks remain. The batter should look thick and glossy.
Assemble and swirl
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Drizzle the thick caramel sauce over the top and swirl with a knife.
- Press the toasted pecan halves across the surface. Keep them in an even layer so every brownie gets a bite of nuts.
Bake
- Bake for 28-32 minutes at 350F until set with moist crumbs. The center should no longer look wet, but it should stay soft.
Finish and serve
- Cool completely so the brownies can set firmly. Drizzle the melted semi-sweet chocolate over the cooled surface.
- Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the top. Slice and serve once the caramel has firmed up.
Notes
For the cleanest caramel swirls, drizzle the caramel in a thin ribbon and make only a few gentle knife passes. Store airtight in the refrigerator up to 5 days; warm individual squares for 10-15 seconds in the microwave. Freeze brownies for up to 2 months—thaw overnight in the fridge. For a lower-sugar option, replace up to half the sugar with a 1:1 baking sweetener, noting the texture may be slightly softer.
