Ingredients

Fruit crisp topping
  • 1.5 cup rolled oats Use rolled oats for the best crunchy crumble texture.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter, cubed Keep butter cold so you get pea-sized pieces and chunky clumps.
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup chopped nuts Optional add-in; use if you want extra crunch.
  • 0.25 cup shredded coconut Optional add-in; adds toasty texture.

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Mix the dry ingredients
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Toss the mixture until the spices and sugars are evenly distributed.
Add optional mix-ins
  1. Add chopped nuts and shredded coconut, if using, then toss to coat evenly with the dry crumble base.
Work in cold butter to form clumps
  1. Add cold cubed butter to the bowl and work it into the mixture using your fingertips, two forks, or a pastry cutter until large chunky clumps form.
  2. Stop when some pea-sized butter pieces remain, since they help the topping stay chunky during baking.
Use or chill
  1. Use the topping immediately by scattering it over your prepared fruit filling, or refrigerate it in an airtight container up to 5 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
Bake
  1. Bake the fruit crisp with the topping at 375°F for 35-45 minutes, until deeply golden over the fruit.

Notes

Pro tip: keep the butter cold and stop when pea-sized bits remain—those pockets create the chunky, crunchy crumble. Refrigerate leftover topping (without baking) in an airtight container up to 5 days; freeze up to 3 months and thaw in the fridge before use. For a lower-sugar option, reduce brown sugar by 1-2 tbsp and expect a slightly softer, less caramelized crumble.
